The Machismo & Marianismo Tango
Machismo, the male ideal so specific to Hispanic culture, is complemented by its corollary marianismo, the female ideal. Both are examined in this careful study..
Meet Dr. David Sequeira
Dr. David Sequeira, a United States citizen since 1975, was born in Nakuru (Kenya), East Africa, and attended high school in Goa, India (old Portuguese colony), where his parents were from His A.A. is from St. Francis de Sales College, Nagpur, and his B.Ph. is from Papal Athaneum, Poona, both in India.
Dr. Sequeira went on to earn his S.T.L. licensate in theology at Catholic University of Fribourg, Switzerland; his M.A. at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles; and his Ph.D. in clinical and social psychology at Wright Institute of Los Angeles. He stayed on in southern California, where he now lives and works as a clinical psychologist.
As a missionary in Brazil, Dr. Sequeira noted that among other machismo characteristics, most local men visited prostitutes and this was tacitly accepted by their wives and children. “I found this very odd,” he says, “and I decided to write my dissertation on machismo in Hispanic culture.”

What Readers Are Saying
“The Machismo and Marianismo Tango” by Dr. David Sequeira is an informative and thought-provoking view of gender roles in Latin American culture and how they structure relationships, personality, and societal values. As someone not very familiar with this topic, I found the book easy to follow and engaging. I especially appreciated how it offers a unique perspective on how these gender principles impact both men and women, not just in Latin America, but worldwide.

I am Hispanic, so this book makes a lot of sense to me. I love the way the author encourages us to reflect. His narrative is educational, and entertaining at the same time. It’s main characteristic, though, it’s definitely that is a thought-provoking book meant not only for Latino culture.
Sol Tyler
Focusing on the cultural balance of machismo and marianismo—the male and female "ideals" in Hispanic society—the author attempts to understand these pervasive and frequently toxic archetypes. Slowly peeling back the layers of this "tough guy" image, readers begin to understand the historical origins of this aggressive masculinity, and its contemporary manifestation across pop culture, politics, community relations and personal wellness.
