The Machismo & Marianismo Tango

Machismo—the male ideal so central to Hispanic culture—is often mirrored by marianismo—the female ideal. This book examines how both shape identity, relationships, and social expectations, and invites readers to reflect on the cultural scripts that influence everyday life.

Meet Dr. David Sequeira

Dr. David Sequeira, a United States citizen since 1975, was born in Nakuru (Kenya), East Africa, and attended high school in Goa, India (old Portuguese colony). His A.A. is from St. Francis de Sales College, Nagpur, and his B.Ph. is from Papal Athenaeum, Poona, both in India.

He went on to earn his S.T.L. licensate in theology at the Catholic University of Fribourg, Switzerland; his M.A. at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles; and his Ph.D. in clinical and social psychology at Wright Institute of Los Angeles. He stayed on in Southern California, where he lives and works as a clinical psychologist.

During his time as a missionary in Brazil, Dr. Sequeira observed everyday expressions of machismo—some so normalized they were rarely questioned. That experience became the spark for deeper study and, ultimately, this book.

Discover the Book

Machismo and Marianismo are more than “attitudes”—they’re cultural blueprints. This chapter introduces their roots, how they form, and why they still influence relationships, family roles, and self-worth today.

How these ideals show up in daily life: dating, marriage, parenting, faith, and community expectations—and the quiet pressures they create for both men and women.

A reflective path forward: recognizing inherited scripts, rebuilding healthier dynamics, and choosing identity with clarity—without losing cultural belonging.
